PuppyPuppy Socialization - Many studies are now showing that early socialization and learning is essential for the healthy development of all puppies. It helps to minimize future behavioral problems such as fear, aggression and anxiety. What most people do not know is that the primary socialization period for most puppies ends at 12 weeks of age. After that time, it may be more difficult for owners to convince their puppies that new things are good things.

This program will involve 45 minutes to one hour (depending on attendance) of puppy socialization.  Puppies between the ages of 8-18 weeks will be exposed to a variety of experiences to help them develop into well adjusted, friendly and safe dogs.  They will be allowed to interact with other “healthy” puppies and be handled by a variety of people.  They will be exposed to skateboards, bikes, umbrellas and many other novel experiences.  Common problems, such as housetraining, playbiting, and destruction will be discussed and written material will be given out. The main goal of this class will be to provide socialization.

Cost - $45.00 - Four Weeks
FREE to all puppies who enroll in further education.
Dog must be between the ages of 8-14 weeks to start. Older puppies may be welcome depending on size and maturity level.
Must have veterinarian signature to reasonably assure health of puppy.

Obedience - Obedience training strengthens the bond between you and your dog. It builds better communication and mutual respect. A well-trained dog is happier because there are fewer restrictions and he will be given more freedom, because he is well trained.

Learning for all dogs should be a lifetime commitment. The graduation certificate, after a six-week beginner's class, does not end the education of your pet. You have only just begun. It is the foundation in which further learning can take place. Your dog may have learned how to perform a down stay, both on lead and when you are standing in front of him. But that is a far cry from staying down during dinner time, with the smell of food circulating through the room. Unless, your giving him the command, within the context that he was taught, he may not truly understand what is expected of him. He must learn that it is the "command" or "cue" that is important to illicit a behavior, not only the particular situation he is in. He may have actually "learned" that he only has to respond to a command, when he is in an obedience mode (when you are practicing). He doesn't know that he must also follow through while he is playing, greeting people, or most importantly, running out the door!

ALL DOGS have the potential to learn these necessary tasks. Some dogs take longer than others, so additional lessons may be added if necessary. The benefits are priceless. Your dog will be happier, safer, and your best friend forever!

"PHASE 1" program will help you build the foundation. We will start by working on building a vocabulary of commands (sit, down, stay, come, leave it, off, etc.) We will also help you manage your dog even before his is trained, so he doesn't learn inappropriate behaviors before learning the appropriate ones. We will also help you with typical problems such as jumping, biting, chewing, housebreaking, etc.

"PHASE 2" obedience program will help you proceed to the next level, which includes off lead work. We will again be working with you and your dog privately, for the first three sessions, to make sure you have a strong foundation with his commands no matter what situation he may be in. If ready, you will then enter into a group class (off lead) for the next four lessons.

Agility - Agility is one of the fastest growing dog sports in the United States. It is as popular with spectators as it is with the participants. The birth of agility began in England, mirroring horse show jumping. The first demonstration of agility was in 1978, at the Crufts dog show, in the UK.

It is a fast paced sport that has dogs racing against the clock over an obstacle course that includes ramps, zigzag weave poles, jumps, and tunnels. Every course is different, so the dogs and their owners must have excellent communication skills as they move from one obstacle to the next. Agility demonstrates the dog’s willingness to work for its handler in a variety of situations.

You can participate in an agility trial for fun and exercise at the local level or if more competitive, you can work towards competing at the AKC National Agility Competition held each year. The AKC also has a World Agility team that competes internationally.

At CANINE ACADEMY, you can start enjoying agility with your dog. Even though our classes are geared for fun and exercise, our beginner and intermediate classes will introduce your dog to all obstacles involved in competition, if you wish to go on. It can be a great way to build up your dog’s confidence and to give him the exercise he needs. However, the best part is, it’s just plain FUN!

Welcome to the AKC's Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program. Started in 1989, CGC is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

The American Kennel Club CGC is rapidly becoming recognized as the standard of behavior for dogs in our communities. Canine Good Citizen resolutions have been passed by 18 state legislatures and the United States Senate. Insurance companies are starting to use CGC to insure breeds they would not otherwise insure, and some condominium associations around the country now require that all dogs in the complex have earned the Canine Good Citizen award.

Debbie, at Canine Academy, is approved, by the American Kennel Club, as a CGC evaluator. If you wish, after your 6 week course you can sign up for testing, which will be given at another location. We also combine our Canine Good Citizens class with pet therapy for those who wish to continue into the pet therapy program.

The American Kennel Club holds scheduled tracking competitions that mirror search and rescue. A fully trained tracking dog has the unique ability to effectively use his highly developed olfactory system, which is a million times better than ours, to accomplish feats that we as humans cannot even dream to do. This unique ability to identify certain scents is innate to all dogs, even yours. Every one of our dogs has followed our own steps from time to time, without any of us being aware of it. However to follow those of a stranger's path is the result of training. One cannot describe in words the thrill of seeing your own dog follow a path of footsteps that have turned in another direction.

Many people train their dogs for specific reasons, such as search and rescue, or competition, but if you think you would enjoy seeing your dog utilize their innate scenting skills, try tracking.

If you like the outdoors, you'll like tracking.

If you are interested in competing with your dog, the AKC also offers various levels of competition as follows.

Tracking Dog (TD)
A dog earns a TD by following a track 440 to 500 yards long with three to five changes of direction. The track is laid by a human tracklayer and is "aged" 30 minutes to two hours before the dog begins scenting. The goal is to use the scented track to locate an article left at the end of the trail by the tracklayer.

Tracking Dog Excellent (TDX)
The TDX is earned by following an "older" track (three to five hours) that is also longer (800 to 1,000 yard) and has five to seven directional changes with the additional challenge of human cross tracks.

Variable Surface Tracking (VST)
In the real world, dogs track through urban settings, as well as through wilderness. A VST dog has demonstrated this ability by following a three- to five-hour-old track that may take him down a street, through a building and other areas devoid of vegetation.

Champion Tracker (CT)
A dog that has successfully completed all three tracking titles (TD, TDX and VST) earns the prestigious title of Champion Tracker.
